Idol Makers Karaoke (American Series)

The Idol Makers Karaoke series is a collection of 27 discs. You can also sing like an ‘American Idol’ was the message from the producers. But are the discs worth buying after the hype?

The brand name is famous, but does that guarantee success? After all, the tracks are no different from those of other karaoke brands.

Indeed, our shout for disc numbers (prefixes) and song lists gave us a headache. That is because we come into possession of many lists. However, we soon saw that all karaoke jockeys (KJs) have similar lists.

Idol Makers Karaoke - IM016 disc label.

Indeed, compiling this list was easy enough, if not a little time-consuming.

We are all familiar with the show and those behind it. But that didn’t guarantee that a venture into karaoke was automatically going to be a success. However, it did mean that a few sales would follow.

The songbook below was also easy to compile. Nevertheless, our thanks go out to those karaoke jockeys (KJs) who gave their lists to us here at Karaoke Info.

We have information about the 27 discs released in the American Series. Correspondingly, here is a list of the disc ID numbers. The prefixes are identical to those on the discs, but some KJs use IMPK001. We don’t know why, but if you do, please tell us.

We list both sets of disc prefixes that are in use by DJs and KJs:

  • IM021
  • IM022
  • IM023
  • IM024

  • IM027

Old school presenters list them as above, but the following prefixes are becoming prominent:

  • IMPK01 to IMPK27

With the series having much respect on TV, you’d think that a resulting karaoke spin-off would be good, so let’s examine a sample or two.

Firstly, the splash screen is dull. It’s the same on every song throughout the series. The colours are about as exciting as having a tooth pulled. Indeed, it’s not pleasing to the eye at all.

Sure, you get the song title, but no other information at the start or finish.

This is so unprofessional to ignore the writers or publishers! As we thought, the choice of backing music was excellent.

The white words change pink as the song progresses, and that’s not an unpleasant mixture on a black background. However, in our three test tracks, they all lagged somewhat. That didn’t make the CDGs cool because the lyrics should sync exactly or be slightly ahead.

The artwork is non-existent on the CDGs, but they do look professional.

Karaoke Song Sample

Although we may use numerous songs for the review, we only provide one sample video to represent the label. So, the song sample for our video presentation is IM004-16 – Van Morrison – Brown Eyed Girl.

Our Verdict

  • On-screen Lyrics: 3.5
  • Music Content: 4.5
  • Splash Screen, Graphics, Video: 3
  • Cover Art: 3.5
  • Overall Average: 3.6
  • Music And Lyrics Average: 4

We gave this collection 4 out of 5 in the rating system below. You can also vote for these, even if you don’t have the discs or tracks. Indeed, all you need to do is watch our presentation video above and judge that.

Desirability Factor

We hoped for great things from this collection, but they didn’t quite hit the mark.

Apart from the hideous splash screen, the only other disappointment was the mistiming of the lyrics.

Our opinion is that there should never be a lag. However, our random samples all lagged. It wasn’t by much, but enough to put us off. With this in mind, we think there are much better karaoke discs.

The Idol Makers Karaoke (American Series) is on sale, primarily on the second-hand market. We saw the complete set marked down to $37 in the USA. That equates to £23 in the UK and $45 in Australia (2014 prices).

Despite our assessment, this does appear to be good value, as the discs are jam-packed with karaoke tracks. Indeed, many have 20 karaoke tracks covering the past six decades.
