Backstage Karaoke: Introduction
Backstage karaoke discs are a bit of a collector’s item nowadays. Indeed, according to some people, they did produce some decent karaoke tracks. But, they were never given too much credit in the karaoke world.
Furthermore, Backstage Karaoke was an arm of NuTech Karaoke. Backstage relied on many NuTech karaoke tracks to fill up their discs sometimes. There are also a few Hot Line Karaoke discs that are Backstage clones.
Use our songbooks and disc prefixes for cross-reference purposes to avoid duplication if you are on a tight budget.
So, if you have the Backstage karaoke collection, you may want to miss this collection if finances are short. Likewise, the Sound Images Karaoke discs and the Standing Ovation Karaoke discs are Backstage clones.
With this in mind, more research is necessary to ensure karaoke collectors do not duplicate their collections. For this reason, we welcome more input on this subject. However, we list some of the AKA discs next to the IDs. For example, BS2717 is aka BS0100 & HSC01!
To repeat, the disc IDs mainly end in the number 17. Due to only four digits in the prefix number, it’s not a problem. But it can make them slightly confusing, when working with them. To clarify, here are the complete collection of disc ID numbers for this series:

The following list of discs includes their “AKA” prefixes. This will help identify dupes that you may want to avoid.

Backstage Karaoke Review
Since many labels are connected to Backstage, we wanted something unique for this label. So, we decided to review a disc full of Bee Gees songs – BS8717.
The splash screen on each track was a white background with the song title in black.
That uninspiring background becomes a dark shade of blue with the lyrics in white.
As the song progresses, the words become red as a prompt for the singer.
The lyrics have a shadow, and although they are legible enough, some people with defective vision may struggle.
We began by playing Massachusettes, and the very first word of the song was wrong, so this was not a very good first impression. This track started with these lyrics: “Heal I’m goin’ back to Massachusetts”, but it should read, “Feel I’m goin’ back to Massachusetts.”
In this case, we found the choice of music to be fine, but the lyrics lagged somewhat. It wasn’t much, but enough to spoil things. They should either match the beat or be fractionally ahead, of course. There was no info at the end of the song.
The cover art is almost non-existent. They are straight to the point, but in plain black and white.
We tried other discs in this collection but couldn’t find many positive things to say about them. There may be variations to the splash screens and lyrics on further discs, but all of ours were uniform.
Backstage Karaoke Sample
Although we may use numerous songs for the review, we only provide one sample video to represent the label. So, the song sample for our video presentation is BS8717-02 – Bee Gees – How Deep Is Your Love.
Our Verdict
- On-screen Lyrics: 2.5
- Music Content: 3
- Splash Screen, Graphics, Video: 2.5
- Cover Art: 2.5
- Overall Average: 2.6
- Music And Lyrics Average: 2.75
The low score from our review suggests that this collection is one to avoid. That is because many other labels score much higher. We gave this collection 3 out of 5 in the rating system below. You can also vote for these, even if you don’t have the discs or tracks. Indeed, all you need to do is watch our presentation video above and judge that.
Desirability Factor
Since better karaoke discs are available in our directory, we feel these discs are only worth it if you get them dirt cheap.
Indeed, our checks show that they were available pretty cheaply on the second-hand market. As with anything else, beware of fakes and discs with deep scratches. That is because karaoke discs that have not had enough care do become a problem.
Generally speaking, as far as collecting karaoke discs goes, the Backstage series is very cheap. For example, on eBay, we saw individual Backstage discs going for £2.50 post-free ($3.20 US) ($4.10 Aus) (2014 prices).
Surprisingly, some karaoke jockeys (KJs) write Backstage as Back Stage Karaoke, which is wrong according to the labels.
Of course, this could be open to debate! With this in mind, why not join the forum and open a thread?
By making a few comments, you are helping others decide if this karaoke series is for them. The opinion from Karaoke Info is that they are not worth having in your collection. But do you agree?
Backstage Karaoke Songbook
A list of disc identities will not help your decision to buy. Therefore, we have a songbook to the list of discs above. Indeed, this is on the next page, like we do with all our karaoke reviews.
You will see that the Backstage Karaoke discs have songs made famous by all the leading artists. Indeed, the Backstage Karaoke songbook is up to the brim with many popular songs. Just remember to watch out for the cloned discs on the other labels.
